Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

"Children of Blood and Bone" is a young adult fantasy novel written by Nigerian-American author Tomi Adeyemi. It was first published in March 2018 and is the first installment in the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy. The book received widespread acclaim and became a New York Times bestseller.

The story is set in the fictional land of Orïsha, which was once filled with magic and populated by different clans of people known as the Maji. However, the magic disappeared after the ruthless King Saran ordered the eradication of all Maji, leaving the land oppressed and divided.

The protagonist of the story is a young Maji girl named Zélie Adebola, who possesses a rare and powerful magical ability. Zélie's mother was killed during the Maji genocide, and she is determined to restore magic to her people and overthrow the tyrannical monarchy. With the help of her brother Tzain and a rogue princess named Amari, Zélie embarks on a dangerous quest to restore magic and bring justice to her land.

As they journey across Orïsha, Zélie and her companions face numerous challenges, encounter mythical creatures, and confront their own inner demons. They must also contend with Inan, Amari's brother and crown prince, who is torn between his loyalty to his father and his growing feelings for Zélie.

"Children of Blood and Bone" explores themes of oppression, prejudice, and the power of standing up against injustice. It draws inspiration from West African mythology and culture, incorporating elements of magic, rituals, and folklore into its narrative.

The success of "Children of Blood and Bone" led to the publication of two sequels: "Children of Virtue and Vengeance" (2019) and "Children of the Vengeance" (forthcoming). The trilogy has gained a wide readership and critical acclaim for its compelling characters, intricate world-building, and thought-provoking themes.
